Pathways of Recovery: The Music of Mindfulness

Dear friends,

We are all recovering from something. Learning to make music from the noise is joyful, creative living, a path of healing and recovery. With mindfulness, curiosity, and care, our afflictions can be revealed as Dharma doors and the ground of awakening—a path that begins with the First Noble Truth. Looking and listening deeply, we discover that all is music, and that even grief, fear, and shame are waves on the ocean of love.

Peter Kuhn is a jazz musician and Dharma teacher who draws on forty years of recovery from active addiction and decades of Buddhist practice. His new book, 12 Step Zen: Pathways of Recovery (Parallax Press), uses the Seven Factors of Awakening as its harmonic structure, weaving together the melodies of recovery and our Zen tradition through his lived experience. In this talk, Peter will share elements of the book along with practical ways to nourish the mind of love and find harmony amid the dissonance of daily life.

Peter’s life is grounded in loving service through the 12 Step community, sangha building and mentoring, years of end-of-life bedside support with Compassion in Action at the San Diego VA Hospital, and nearly a decade with the Prison Meditation Project at Donovan State Prison.
